The Love Charm Talisman Collection - A Pilgrimage to Love ♥︎

The Love Charm Talisman Collection - A Pilgrimage to Love ♥︎

We all yearn for love in one way or another, after all, love is a greater mystery than death. After being in solitude for some amount of time, I was inspired to create a collection that is dedicated to this force that continues to inspire us and leave us in awe.

I didn’t set out to create such a collection, but it felt like the right timing to do so, and it gradually grew into this form - to inspire love, help people to meet their ideal counterpart, and to maintain good relationships.

What is a world without love? Can you imagine that?

Love - it feels so intangible. What does love look like to you? What does it smell like? If you can touch it, how would it feel? How does it taste? Can you hear the sound of love? Can you sense it in the air?

Love is beauty, the world becomes dull and grey without it, static and still, uninspiring.

For those who seek love, I present my first-ever talismanic collection to you.

Inspired by jewellery designs of the Romantic period from the Victorian Era, entirely handcrafted by me. Each piece features a ceramic charm with silver glaze, fired 3 times in the kiln, upon it a forget me not motive engraved in the middle symbolizing deep love and connection, complemented with five pearlescent seeds forming a cross of faith and loyalty, attached on a velvet ribbon ending with a silver clasp.

Upon creating the charm, I visited two local sites that are famous for relationships and matters of love in our local folk tradition to receive blessings for this work. The Lover’s Rock in Mid-Levels and Lung Mo Temple in Peng Chau respectively.

Incense ashes from their altar and dirt from the land were collected with permission of these sacred places, they are used along with other herbs in the creation of these talismans for support and then consecrated with the blessed water of the Lung Mo Temple according to the Trolldom tradition.

I first went to the Lovers’ Rock on the 6th day of the first lunar month, which is thought to be the most auspicious date to ask for blessings throughout the whole year. Prior to my trip to Wan Chai, I initially thought it is the phallic like stone being worshipped. After arriving, I scryed at the area and found two spirits that were said to have committed suicide and now residing there and blessing people who came to pray for love and fertility. As instructed by the spirits, I gave my offerings with the help of the family who’s been managing this place for generations since the 50s.

I was reassured they would grant any wish on love and relationships, not only limited to romantic partners but all spheres including work, family, platonic, finance and safety. They were very straightforward and kind.

Before the first full moon of the first lunar month, I went to the Lung Mo Temple, also called Yuet Lung Sing Yuen on Peng Chau, famed for her ability to give blessings for fertility, this goddess was brought to Hong Kong by a woman, Ms. Chung, after receiving a prophetic dream to build a temple in her name in the 40s, and moved to the current address in the 70s with good feng shui.

Lung Mo aka the Dragon Mother is a river spirit, hailed from Guangzhou since the Warring Period, with legends of her being extremely accurate on fortune-telling, also famed for her ability to bless for fertility in the current practice of worship of this deity.

After greeting the mother, I gave my offerings and asked for permission for blessings, she promptly agreed. Since this deity is a non-human spirit, she seems to possess a different quality and characteristic than the couple at the Lovers’ Rock, although she gives blessings and protections, her understanding of the human emotions, wishes and prayers is different.

Two black dogs were seen since my landing on the island, and 5 black birds later on the beach next to the Lung Mo Temple. I consider those good omens for the blessings that I received from the spirit for my petition.

Since this is a private temple which is not government run, it is managed by a family, now at their third generation. After chatting with the auntie who’s currently managing it, she told me she originally came to petition for a partner and then got married to the son of the said family and now she’s also helping out.

A deep realization of the preciousness of this force which continues to nurture and inspire us to live, the motion it creates brings great gratitude to the end of the process of creating these charms.

Five of these talismans were made, each carrying the blessings and energies from my pilgrimage.
